For these spooky days, I have made a collection for you of the best 10 horror movies you must watch for Halloween including five classic recommendations and five personal ones. If you have not watched these first five classics yet, you need to because even though they are old it does not make them any less scary.

1. THE EXORCIST

With 10 Oscar nominations and winning two of those Oscars for best adapted screenplay and best sound, it was banned in the UK due to religious groups denouncing its content as immoral to audience members. The movie saw audience members fainting and vomiting during its theatrical run in the seventies. It is the best movie to start with this Halloween season. An unforgettable two hours of violent and graphic special effects which keeps traumatizing generations since the year it was released.

2. HALLOWEEN

One of the most successful independent movies of all time even though it was a low-budget movie. Halloween has one of the most famous film scores and horror themes ever, setting a precedent in horror film history and cinema. So enjoy one of the most infamous horror movie monsters ever created, Michael Myers.

3. THE SHINING

Based on one of Stephen King’s horror novels, Stanley Kubric adapted his story into what would become one of the most iconic cult films of the time and for strange reasons. The unorthodox filming methods of Kubric created this masterpiece ready to be watched. It will make you feel very uncomfortable and just be careful it does not make you sick while watching it.

4. THE CONJURING

“BASED ON TRUE EVENTS”, as scary as it seems, this might be one of the most successful horror movies of all time which can captivate you in a horrifying realistic story while telling separately a love story between two characters that actually existed in real life.

5. PSYCHO

This was a controversial movie for its time due to its first heated love scene, being based on a real serial killer story, being considered as something of a cult classic and nominated for four Oscars. This movie immersed you in a horrifying psychopath story while you admire a beautiful cinematography for an hour and 46 minutes straight.

The next five movies are personal recommendations with more modern and psychological aspects that you can still enjoy and get horrified by. I made this extended research for you to get scared by different quality horror films.

6. THE ORPHANAGE

This is one of the best horror movies I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy as well as one of the most interesting ones. It has one of the best stories and some of the best acting and direction I have seen. It qualified as an R rating movie due to some very graphic scenes and some other heart breaking ones which besides making it really hard to watch if you’re a sensitive person, will completely entertain you due to the quality of its story.

7. MIDSOMMAR

This movie is a psychological journey which immerses you mentally and emotionally, making it an outstanding horror movie. This movie is a collection of disturbing and very uncomfortable scenes to watch at some point making you feel part of the story and with an ending you will feel guilty to enjoy.

8. HEREDITARY

From the same director who brought you Midsommar, Ari Aster, this movie slowly brings you into a family’s tragedy which becomes more and more horrifying, then leave you breathless with an extremely creepy ending. I am sure it will cause you some kind of strange sensations you would rather forget, without mentioning it is a very graphic movie, so be aware.

9. TALK TO ME

This recent horror hit was surprisingly more than I ever expected it to be, probably one of my favorite horror films of the year. This twisted story in which some young teenagers’ drug addiction is to lend their bodies to spiritual forces will completely freak you out and make you turn your head more than once. Completely recommend and worthy to give it the chance.

10. THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE

This interesting and horror inclined drama which includes gruesome imagery, explicit scenes of demonic possession, animalistic behavior and self-inflicted violence is an unmissable film you need to watch before Halloween ends, as its scenes are done in such a way that you wonder if you are watching the real story it is based on or if you are actually watching a movie, terrifying.

I hope you enjoy this recommendation of movies I took the time to collect for you to have the most horrifying Halloween of all time on your own, with your loved ones or with whoever you would like to traumatize and scare for a couple of hours, Happy Halloween.
