Canadian paralympic athletes raised the bar high with a new 28-medal record at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.

This is nine more than the last record, set in Vancouver, at the 2010 Paralympic Games.

The Games wrapped up in Pyeongchang, South Korea on March 18.

With eight gold, four silver and 16 bronze, Canada placed second overall in the medal standings. The United States placed first.

Canada won events in alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, ice hockey and wheelchair curling.

Canadian vision-impaired cross country skier Brian McKeever kept his title of most decorated paralympian winning a gold medal and three bronze medals, putting his total at 14. His fifth Paralympic Games, McKeever was the flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies.

China took home their first-ever paralympic medal, clinching the gold in wheelchair curling over Norway in a tight 6-5 win in an extra end game.

In more first-time news, South Korea won the bronze medal ice hockey match against Italy for their first-ever paralympic medal in the sport. Winning on home ice in Pyeongchang added an emotional element for the team.

Canadian biathlon and para-nordic skier Mark Arendz won three bronze medals, two silvers and one gold and was chosen to be the official flag-bearer in the closing ceremonies. This was Arendz’s third winter Paralympic Games.

The 2020 Summer Paralympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan and the next Winter Paralympic Games are set to take place in Beijing, China in 2022.
