5,700 on city wait list for affordable housing
Figures from 2019 show a worsening crisis in affordable housing and homelessness in Windsor.
There are 6,500 people in Windsor cannot afford to buy a home because they spend more than 50 per cent of their income on housing.
The City of Windsor also has a list of more than 5,700 people waiting for affordable housing.
According to the City of Windsor, homeless people in Windsor and Essex are made up of men, women, youth and children. Homelessness can occur because of a range of factors, such as abuse, unemployment, unmanageable living costs, mental health or addiction problems.
The City of Windsor strives to meet the needs of the homeless or those at risk of homelessness through a variety of residential and non-residential projects. They have used federal funds to create additional transitional housing units and support services for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and remains committed to building community capacity to better meet the needs of the homeless and ensure that the number of homeless people is reduced.
