The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society will be hosting its second annual Halloween-themed walkathon.

It will take place in Dieppe Gardens on Oct. 26. Registration will be at 10 a.m. and the five kilometer walk will begin at 11 a.m. There will also be other festivities that will take place so the Hallowoof walk-a-thon won’t end until 2 p.m. This is the 23rd annual walk that the humane society has hosted but the second Halloween-themed walk.

Prizes will be awarded for best costume, funniest costume, scariest costume and best group costume. There will be two new costume categories which are best cat costume and best couples’ costume. There will also be prizes for the top pledge collectors in three categories. These categories include pledge collectors under 18, adult pledge collectors and team pledge collectors.

If participants raise $100, they will receive a $10 gift card to For Your Fur Kids. Raise $750 and they will receive a $50 Visa gift card. There will also be a reward for those who raise $300 but the prize has yet to be determined.

Other than the walk and the costume contest, participants can also see Dan Valkos, a pet psychic.

There will be face painting and the Windsor Express Cheerleaders will be performing, both of which are new this year. Another new feature will be trick-or-treating during the walk, where walkers and pets alike will receive a treat for every kilometre they travel.

If you haven’t already begun collecting pledges and have not registered, pet owners can go online to register individually, create a new team or join another team that already exists. Once you are registered online, you can print off your pledge sheet which can also be found online at the humane society website. You can either collect your pledges online through registration, bring them to the event or a combination of both. There is a minimum $20 pledge in order to register for the event.

For more information about the event, applicants can call Amanda Orr, the event co-ordinator, at (519) 966 5751 extension 23, or email her at [email protected]. Registration closes on Oct. 25 at 3 p.m.
