Black Friday Sales Come to Windsor

Black Friday is a big day for American shopping, but stores in Windsor, Ontario are joining in on the discounted madness.

Devonshire Mall, Windsor’s largest retail mall has been preparing for November 28, when they will host their very own Black Friday sales. Only some stores will participate in the Black Friday deals. Many Windsor locals take trips to the states just to get their hands on great sales. To keep shoppers here, the mall will be holding a contest where two shoppers can win $250 towards mall purchases.

Devonshire Mall is expecting a busy day, but some of Windsor’s locals don’t know Devonshire participates in Black Friday.

“No, I didn’t know they had Black Friday sales at Devonshire,” said Hunter Soulliere, 18, a first year civil engineering student at St. Clair College. “Black Friday in Windsor will never compete with America’s Black Friday. The sales are just too good over there.”

Soulliere has never attended Black Friday sales in the states because his family rarely goes there to shop. This year, Soulliere plans to go check out the sales at Devonshire Mall and hopefully win that $250 shopping spree.

“Our store doesn’t participate in Black Friday. We aren’t considered a discount retailer,” said Courtney Berglund, 24, the manager at Zumiez, a clothing store at Devonshire Mall. “We will be busy. The mall is typically packed, but most people come in and notice none of our sales have changed and then they leave. Having a Black Friday in Canada isn’t even a very good concept to me. The deals over there are crazy on that day. We could never compete.”

Not all the stores will participate in the Black Friday’s sales events. “A few stores that are at the mall will participate in the sales, but all of the big corporately owned ones such as ourselves wouldn’t allow it,” said Berglund.

“The stores, obviously it’s up to them to come up with their own promotions for Black Friday,” said Devonshire mall administration.
