Public Relations students plan St. Clair hockey game

Public Relations students are planning a floor hockey game to be hosted at the St.Clair College.

The game will be held on Nov. 1 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with St. Clair College athletes competing against media figures from CTV, the Windsor Star, Cogeco, CBC and others. Profits are set to go towards both the St. Clair student food bank and the Windsor-Essex food bank  Association.

The event will be free to attend with a canned good donation.

All media figures in the area will be welcome to participate. Newspapers, radio and television outlets are all invited to try their prowess against the St. Clair Saints athletic association.

The event was started by Public Relations students Bill Chapman, Laurie Harrison, Jeff Casteneda and Helen Medel. In an assignment given by teacher Sara Overton for their event planning class, the four decided on a hockey game. With St. Clair putting together an unnamed team of athletes to combat the media, the event is sure to bring in numbers from all over Essex County.

“We wanted to hit three goals,” says Harrison, a mother who is currently in the public relations program full time. “We wanted to do something good for the school, we wanted to do something good

for the community and we wanted to do something that we could put on our resumes and give us some real life experience.”

While only St. Clair students and Windsor celebrities are allowed to compete, students from the main campus, the public relations and the journalism program can volunteer to help at the event. Those interested in being part of the event should follow it through Twitter at SCCshutout, or at their Facebook page “shutout hunger with St. Clair College.”

Blackburn Radio will be sending radio DJs and sports casters and Bob Bellacicco of CTV Windsor News has promised to attend and will be bringing along five or six others to play as well. The Student

Representative Council has asked the firefighting department if they will join in the day’s events and sell calendars with proceeds going towards the food banks as well. Prizes include so far gift baskets and Tim Hortons gift cards. Windsor Express tickets will also be given out.

The group’s first choice to hold the event at was the Sportsplex but their request was denied. Instead it will be held at the college’s main campus auditorium.

“It’s new and it has state of the art flooring,” said Helen Medel. “To put hockey sticks and that is just a little bit rough right now.”

While the event will be free, donations are appreciated. All money raised will be going towards the two food banks.
