Students at St. Clair brought their kids for a day of hands on activities.

The college’s Early Childhood Education program organized a family party with games, crafts and snacks at the main campus’ student lounge on Nov. 5. The main goals of the event were for students of ECE to get hands-on experience working with children and prove them with an open environment.

An ECE professor said her students were excited to practice conflict resolution.

“There have been times a child would be found crying at this event,” said Danielle Koresky, an ECE Professor. “A student would use their conflict resolution skills to resolve the problem which is a great learning experience.”

Some of the things kids and parents at the event could do were create bracelets, acorn bird feeders and play floor hockey with pool noodles. Tricycles donated by Student Representative Council were ridden around the lounge by both kids and volunteers of the ECE Club.

Lauren Messina, a second year ECE student and president of ECE club, said the activities were designed to be open-ended and allow the children to develop their creative skills.

“We don’t try to give a child certain expectations like giving them an example of our work,” said Messina. “It doesn’t allow them to think outside the box and be independent.”

The final activity let kids go under the parachute to play a few unique games. The next event from the ECE program will be in December.
