The Windsor Spitfires have claimed forward Russian Alexander Khokhlachev on re-entry waivers.

Khokhlachev left the Spitfires after two seasons in which he put up 145 points to join Spartak Moscow, his father’s team in Russia.

As a rookie in the Kontinental Hockey League, Khokhlachev has put up just one point in 16 games.

To free up an import spot, they cut ties with Slovakian forward Juraj Bezuch.

Bezuch, acquired during the pre-season from Kitchener, had played his way out of the lineup. He was held pointless in four games with the Spits and had been a healthy scratch on two occasions.

The Spitfires have not said whether or not Khokhlachev will return from Russia this year, but by claiming him on waivers they open up that possibility.

“This is a window of opportunity for Alex to come back to Windsor,” Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel said. “If he is going to play in the CHL this year, it’s going to be for the Spitfires. And he will be welcomed back.”

Stay tuned for more as this situation develops.
