A Windsor art gallery, Artcite Inc., is presenting the installation After the Hunt by a Montreal based artist.

Artcite Inc. is an artist-run centre for the contemporary arts. There will be an opening reception with Emily Jan.

The artist work was inspired by a Flemish painter, Franz Snijders. Jan’s work displays the use of flowers, fruits and silverware and is carefully arranged around a table with a life-sized gutted roe deer.

Martin Stevens, who works in the gallery, said the art is based on the 17th century Flemish painting. Stevens’ partner Sasha Opekio also works at Artcite. Opeiko said the gallery is mostly Windsor based.

“In the past, the gallery has collaborated with other cities. Sometimes, artist run centers will exchange shows but that hasn’t happened in a while,” she said.

Stevens said they receive a wide variety of work including sculptures, paintings and photography.

The currently featured artist Emily Jan, said she’s been creating art her whole life and went back to school for fine art in 2007. Jan also worked as a journalist for a short period of time and has traveled to 32 countries and lived in four of them: South Africa, Mexico, the US and Canada.

Art seems to run in the family and her grandmother was a painter who sparked an interest in Jan. Growing up in San Francisco, she was exposed to many inspiring art museums.

“Certain kinds of things can only be expressed physically,” Jan said.

She also said the places she has traveled have inspired her and she loves to learn new techniques.

Jan said from the time she knew her idea was going to be table length it took her about a year and a half to complete. She said she draws inspiration from the eclectic experiences of life. Some recent exhibitions of hers include Futur Fulklore at the M.A.I. in Montréal, You Maniacs You Blew It Up! at PDA Projects in Ottawa and Falling Through the Mirror at Latitude 53 in Edmonton.

According to Artcite, After the Hunt / Before the Fall is a pair of installations which look to art history and natural history. After the Hunt is a life-sized tableau based on the visual language of 17th century still-life painting.

The display is open to the public and free of charge. For more information, visit artcite.ca.
