Amherstburg Celebrates Remembrance Day
By Aaron Wharram
People in the Town of Amherstburg gathered around the cenotaph at King’s Navy Yard Park Friday morning to remember veterans who have given their lives in Canadian military operations.
The ceremony started with a parade led by Capt. Richard Girard which went around the small block of Richmond Street and Sandwich Street. The parade included Royal Canadian Legion Branch 157 members, local fire and police officers, members of the town’s administration and the 202 Fort Malden Army Cadets Corps. After everyone took their positions, the General Amherst School Band played “O’Canada” to the large crowd.
Next, several representatives from the town began to lay wreaths in front of the cenotaph in honour of the fallen soldiers who died during the wars.
Many guests were at the ceremony including Amherstburg Mayor Aldo Dicarlo.
“It’s great to see the town of Amherstburg united,” said Dicarlo.
He talked about how all of the veterans needed to be remembered for how they gave up their freedoms so that Canada would be able to stay a free country.
“All of their sacrifices lasted through many generations and now it is our time to return the favour,” said Dicarlo.
After the speeches the parade marched back to the legion to conclude the Remembrance Day ceremony. Many people, including war veterans stayed at the legion to enjoy refreshments and have prayers in honour of the fallen soldiers.
