It is not a sprint, it is Detroit’s Free Press Chemical Bank Marathon

It was started 40 years ago by Neal Shine, after a pleasant experience at Falmouth Road Race in Massachusetts.

Being the managing director of the Detroit Free Press, he suggested the newspaper sponsor a similar event in Detroit.

The participants now come from Michigan, Windsor and all over the world – people who travel each year to compete in the race. Professionals, recreational runners and even people with physical disabilities are enthusiastic to join the 26.2 miles (42 km).

“Over 26,000 registrations are confirmed for this Sunday’s event. Approximately, 50 handicapped participants have enrolled for push run and hand cycle. The participation number has always been going up, over the years,” said Leah Yanuszeski, the digital director and spokesperson for the event.

Organizers have tried to find something for everyone. Aside from the full marathon, there is a half-marathon plus a relay, 5k walk/run and a Kids Fun Run. The primary goal is to give every participant something they can achieve.

Runners in the full marathon cross into Canada and head back to the U.S. for the finish, using both the Ambassador bridge and the tunnel.
