Coin collecting a valuable hobby

More than 25 dealers from the Windsor region displayed their treasures at the annual L.A. Coin Show at Windsor Moose Lodge on Sunday March 18, 2018.

The buyers and dealers were all excited to explore what was on the table, to collect more coins, currency, supplies, war memorabilia and more from around the world.

Margaret Clarke, a numismatist from the Windsor Coin Club said, “Coins show the history of Canada, when coin collectors collect Canadian coins, world coins, they can dig up the history of what happening in those countries.”

Clarke also clarified various reasons for collecting coins based on theme, shapes, topic, animals, events, monarchs and material value of the coin such as gold, silver or platinum .

According to Clarke, there are good number of coin collectors from Windsor and they like to enrich their collection from Windsor coin shows rather than from other cities.

Dealer Jeff Webb from JCW Coins said, “Everybody collects coins, mainly because the bullion value of gold and silver is always going up.”

“It is profitable hobby to be in,” said Webb.

Webb also said the Windsor Coin Club is the largest coin club in Canada. They run youth programs to teach coin collecting.

Cathy Schmidt, a member of Windsor Coin Club said, “We encourage young people to come out and to learn all about coin collecting, and we try to get younger generation to take part in this hobby.”

Schmidt also said that collectors from older generations are more active in this hobby out of “pure joy.” They continue this hobby for their children and grandchildren to mark their legacy.
