What’s in hairstyle

Local Barbers see that more men are getting their hair styled rather than trimmed.

Mark Lombardi, 44, is the owner and a barber at Lombardi’s Classic Cuts. Barbers in his shop focus on cutting hair in a classic style with a modern twist. Lombardi has been cutting hair for six years, he opened his shop because he believed there was a need for guys to groom themselves and wanted to provide an opportunity for men with an interest in their appearance.

“I think it’s fantastic that there’s a new wave of men that are now grooming themselves like they used to between the 1800s to 1940s,” Lombardi said. “Men should be grooming themselves, they should be getting hot shaves, they should be doing their hair up nice, wearing nice clothes and looking good.”

While social media, celebrities and sports inspire men to style their hair in a similar way, he has seen men take a creative approach to their hair.

“Back then, every decade had a style. I think everybody today has their own style,” said Lombardi. “I think everyone’s got their own perspective on what they want and I think that’s a good thing.”

Dean Cahill, 47, is an employee at Lombardi’s Classic Cuts and has been working with hair for 30 years. Originally from Sheffield in Yorkshire, England, Cahill worked for four other barber shops until moving to Ontario in 2009.

“When I came to Canada, there was one hairstyle called the Windsor haircut which was just a Caesar. There was no variety,” Cahill said. “Since the last nine years there’s been so many different hairstyles. It’s like a restaurant. They used to have two meals and now they got 20 different meals.”

Cahill also believes that popular haircuts are influenced by athletes and celebrities, as well as an interest that men are taking in their appearance.

“It’s not just about what shoes, what jeans or what shirt you’re wearing. You got to fix your hair and people care about that stuff,” said Cahill.

Hairstyles evolve with every decade. A trend will exist, but there will always be an interest in being unique.

“Lots of good looking people out there these days and they should be taking care of themselves,” said Lombardi. “Why not wake up feeling fresh, looking good and presenting yourself out there with how you want to look?”
