Preparations underway for Bright Lights Windsor

Construction has started at Jackson Park for the Bright Lights festival, one of the most beautiful and controversial events of last year.

The park’s entrance has been fenced off and will be open and closed while they assemble the tree for the centre. The park will remain open for the time being but as the winter grows closer, it will eventually be taken over by the attractions. Officials will release more information after Remembrance Day.

The Bright Lights budget was cut from $3 million to $1.5 million after several complaints from the public.  According to the City, it will not greatly affect the display and they will have some of the same light displays from last year.

City of Windsor events and initiatives coordinator Michelle Staadegaard said they are keeping some surprises for the grand opening and there will be lots of new additions this year.

“It will be a great opportunity for people to get food and beverages on special programming days,” said Staadegaard. “On Fridays and Saturdays you can expect some activities and entertainment that will be on site.”

Last year’s event drew more than 60,000 people, said the city.
