Want to be a police officer? Now’s your chance.

Windsor Police is looking to hire 24 additional officers now that the Windsor Police Services Board has endorsed the plan by Mayor Drew Dilkens to increase patrols in the downtown core.

“Now is a great opportunity. If you’re looking for a career in policing, now is the time to apply,” said Dilkens.

One of the primary functions of the new Problem Oriented Policing or POP unit will be to crack down on drug use in the city and the spin-off crimes caused by addiction.

Police Chief Al Frederick said the first 12 hires will be set aside for policing orientation immediately but that the 24 officers hired will not be on the street until mid-2019.

Windsor Police is seeking a 6.4 percent budget increase from $83 million to $89 million.
