Hockey fans are reeling after the Toronto Maple Leafs lost to a Carolina Hurricanes team that was backed by the Toronto Marlies zamboni driver David Ayres.

The wild game in Toronto saw both Hurricanes’ goalies leave the ice with injuries with less than half the game remaining. With no where else to turn, the emergency goalie supplied by the Toronto Maple Leafs strapped up his pads and took to the crease.

The 42-year-old Toronto Marlies Zamboni driver, who is also a practice goalie for the Leafs, stopped eight of 10 shots he took and earned the title of the oldest goalie to win his NHL debut.

Not only did Ayres record a win, but he also recorded a shot on goal – a rarity for any NHL goalie.

Despite contributing to an essential win for the Carolina Hurricanes and taking down the Toronto Maple Leafs, Ayres received a standing ovation from fans at Scotiabank Centre in Toronto when he was awarded the first star of the game.
