The 15th annual Windsor-Essex Sports Person of the Year Awards are coming up and nominations are out in 35 categories.

WESPY Awards founder, Domenic Papa said he’s looking forward to this year’s ceremony.

“It’s a tough job every year to find a winner because our athletic competition, our teams, are very deep and rich. I’m very proud of what the selection committee has done over the years,” said Papa.

Papa said the WESPYS have supported many athletes that have gone on to receive scholarships, professional sports contracts and even made it to the Olympics.

“Tyrone Crawford, when he was a high school student at Catholic Central, was our male athlete of the year. Now he plays for the Dallas Cowboys. We know we have very special athletes and teams here,” said Papa.

Other athletes who have been recognized by the WESPY’s selection committee are: professional hockey players Ryan Ellis and Taylor Hull, Olympic runner Michelle Bishop and national record holder/track and field runner, Brandon McBride.

The awards ceremony is on March 10 at the Caboto Club at 7 p.m.
