Windsor FCA assembly plant to eliminate third shift by end of June

The Windsor Fiat Chrysler Automobiles assembly plant announced the elimination of its third shift on Feb. 27. The company will run two shifts starting June 29.

According to UNIFOR, the decision will eliminate approximately 1,500 jobs.

The company  said that packages will be provided to eligible employees and that they will make an effort to put indefinitely laid off employees in open full-time positions that are available.

Jerry Dias, UNIFOR national president said that UNIFOR will continue to push all levels of government for a national auto strategy to help stabilize and grow this key sector.

“There is no question that the economic ramifications of the FCA eliminating a shift will be felt across the Windsor region and throughout the country,” said Dias on Twitter.

President of Unifor Local 444 Dave Cassidy posted on social media last night, voicing his outrage at the announcement.

“We are all in this together,” said Cassidy

The third shifts has been in place since 1993 and was first intended to be eliminated in March 2019 before it was extended.
