Retired hydraulic technician, Tony Tiberia, takes Halloween decorating to the next level.

“To put the stuff out It’ll take about a week and a half or so, but then to do the final touches it takes a couple more days,” said Tiberia.

Canadians like Tiberia will spend just under $70 on a combination of decorations, candy, costumes and pumpkins in 2021. According to a budget estimate by HelloSafe.ca, Halloween festivities cost money.

Tiberia said he switched all his lights to LED. This will save him money throughout the season.

“Four or five are brand new. There are a few others that I reworked and upgraded so they look different so you can say they’re new ones too,” said Tiberia.

To get the most out of each decoration, Tiberia replaced the buttons in most of his props to motion sensors and added new things to older items to spice them up.

Tiberia said he waits until the end of October, when stores reduce the prices of decorations and then he buys them at a reduced price. However, he said his newest decoration, Sally, was bought this month for around $300.

According to Hello Safe, the average Canadian will spend around $7.00 just on Halloween decorations. Some will not spend any at all.

Sharon Tiberia, Tony’s sister-in-law who lives close by, says her neighbourhood is not like it used to be on Halloween.

“I think a lot of kids now are doing house parties and families think that it’s safer to have it contained within the house, instead of going door to door,” said Tiberia.

Tiberia said she can’t sit outside waiting for trick or treaters, as there are large gaps of time in between and she would prefer to wait inside.

Tiberia said she estimates the candy she buys costs around $40 to $50. She waits closer to Halloween to buy the candy or else it’ll all be eaten before the actual day.

According to Hello safe, $385 million worth of candy will be sold in Canada this year in October alone. That is a 28 per cent increase from last year.

Happy Halloween.
