Local restaurants and bars celebrating successful Super Bowl LVI events despite only being able to host up to 50 per cent capacity.

Some restaurants were going big this year considering last year’s Super Bowl was during a lockdown.

Colleen Kelly, manager of Average Joes, said they have hosted a Super Bowl party every year for the past 10 years.

Kelly said this year Average Joes raffled off four 55-inch TVs, coolers, a beer fridge, jackets and swag bags.

“Since most restaurants are still under restrictions, we’re going to hope for the best,” said Kelly. “We’re fortunate because our capacity is quite large. Normally there’s 300 people in here for Super Bowl.”

With Covid restrictions still in place in Ontario, Kelly said she was hoping it would be really busy on the take-out side as well as the dine-in side.

Bill Price, a Detroit Lions fan, watches the Super Bowl every year on TV. He said this year will be quiet compared to recent years, but he will keep the tradition of eating wings and drinking beer.

Considering he has supported Matt Stafford during his years on the Lions, Price was cheering for him and the L.A. Rams to win the championship game.

“I would love to see Stafford throw an 80-yard touchdown pass. That would be one of my highlights,” said Price.

Stafford’s 79-yard touchdown pass to win the game in the fourth quarter almost made Price’s dream come true.

He said the Super Bowl is the best sporting event compared to hockey and basketball championship games.

“It’s two teams playing for winner takes all whereas hockey it’s the best of seven,” said Price. “The Super Bowl brings together the whole family.”

The L.A. Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals at SoFi Stadium by a score of 23 to 20 this past Sunday.
