The Capitol Theater wants you to showcase your memories of the building at a 100-year anniversary party planned in 2023.

“We decided to launch this memories campaign it is an initiative to invite the community to share their favorite memories of the capitol theater so we can archive them for internal use and also to do a community message board,” said Julia Galee, the Capitol Theatre manager.

Capitol theatre is the largest single floor theater in Canada, with 1,995 seats. It is now a performing arts center owned by the city of Windsor but operated by the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

“The theater when its first open would play vaudeville stage productions at the beginning and then transition to showing cinema on the original opening night, the theater had everything from singers, comedians, sharpshooters on stage and then actually show a buster Keaton short film so all in one day so a little bit of everything.”

Later, through the years famous players had ownership of the building doing some renovations to change the layout from one space, into three separate spaces that still exist today.

“A lot of people loved to share their memories of the theater and we a have a couple of gems that we are holding on to unveil at the February event but there are some children and grandchildren for the people who have worked here in the 40’s for example and they have captured those memories and shared them with us.” Galee said.
