Windsorites protest firmly for Palestinians

A protest for Palestine took place through the streets of downtown Windsor on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Protesters shouted, “Free Palestine,” “Resistance is existence,” and some Arabic phrases asking for a ceasefire.

People were enraged but contained.

At 7:30 p.m., a man led the Islamic prayer (the Adhan) using a microphone and protesters listened with silence. As the Adhan was being called, some teenagers were standing high on the base of the Canadian flagpole.

After the Adhan was called, some of the Muslims gathered behind Imam Muhammad Abuelezz – the Imam is the prayer leader in Islam.

“Muslims have five daily prayers that they should pray on time and we are not supposed to miss these prayers under any circumstances,” Abuelezz said. “Our prayer in itself is a message, a message that we are a people of faith, and our faith is very important to us.”

Near the end of the protest one of the leading protesters gave a compelling, strong and connected speech to the protesters.

“Israel has this much power,” the woman said as she explained the magnitude of the warfare in Israel. “We are civilized. Don’t give nobody the advantage, to take advantage of and play and think the narrative they have of us.”
