Windsor reported to have most affordable rent rates
Rents have increased sharply in Windsor over the past few years but a new report says the city actually boosts some of the most affordable rents in Canada.
It may not seem like rent in Windsor is affordable, but according to the Canada mortgage and housing corporation the city has emerged as the front runner for the lowest housing rents in all of Canada.
“In Windsor there are lot of international students, and they don’t have part time jobs and they can’t afford higher also native Canadians are leaving Windsor and that is why we have lower house rents in Windsor,” said Milia Wang.
According to Kevin Hughes, Deputy Chief Economist at CMHC, there is a strong rental demand that is surpassing supply in communities across the country in 2023.
“It is very difficult for renters to find housing they can afford, said Hughes. “There is an urgent need to increase this supply.”
The vacancy rate in Windsor is 2.0 per cent and the average two-bedroom rent is $1,253, which is up by 6.5 per cent from last year.
“We have a low income in Windsor and to match that rent is low compared to other cities,” said Chau Pham.
