Students question need for uniforms
F.J Brennan Catholic High School graduates say they are thankful their uniform wearing days are over and are ready to go back to their usual clothes.
On average a typical student spends over $215 on a mandatory school uniform to attend a Catholic high school. With the economy in question, some people are finding it stressful and uncomfortable to reach the schools’ expectations.
“I hate them- people think they’re a good idea because you don’t have to spend time deciding what to wear in the morning, but you still do,” said Rebekah Bruni, a 2012 graduate from Brennan. “These uniforms cost more than I’d spend on an outfit, and the lack in quality makes it all that much more frustrating.”
Students are required to take a physical education class which you must purchase a separate uniform for. Many parents are having to re-think a Catholic school for their child due to the expense.
“My child has grown up in the Catholic religion surroundings, and we are practising Catholics, but my paycheck only goes so far,” said Anna LeClair, a single mother of two.
For others, wearing a uniform isn’t such a bad idea.
“For me, it was simple. All I had to do was wake up and not put too much thought in what I had to wear that day,” said Marissa Karatzias, a 2012 Brennan graduate.
