Deadpool X Wolverine Mini Review

Pretty recently, Marvel’s Deadpool X Wolverine hit the cinemas with Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine.

After the current drought of interest regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool X Wolverine was a pleasant shock of quality amongst a sea of mediocrity. Most audience reviews have been positive, however there has been a fair share of criticism as well. Personally, I found the dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine entertaining throughout the movie.

They have a clear funny man and straight man back and forth between them. The opening sequence is the funniest part of the movie and happens to be my favorite part. The villains were decently entertaining, though neither had much of an aura to them – one was a joke without much threat while the other was slightly uninteresting. A decent number of jokes didn’t land all that well – mostly the reference humor – but enough did to outweigh those that didn’t. Though even with all these positives, I have one large grievance towards this movie: the fight scenes. There were so many fights – with about three just between Deadpool and Wolverine themselves – and the only one I have purely positive feelings towards is the opening scene. The rest were either stilted or forgettable; the combat felt less like a battle and more like two models going from pose to pose in an imitation of a fight. In a movie with so much fighting it’s disappointing that it feels like a slog watching through the fight instead of enjoying it. Overall, I liked the movie! It certainly wasn’t perfect, but it had a lot of charm that many of the more recent Marvel movies lack. I could see the love these actors felt for the characters they got to revisit and play on the other side of the screen and my enjoyment reflected that. I would give this movie an 8/10, the first one was better.
