Halloween: From Trick or Treat to Trunk or Treat?

Anyone born before the late 90s will tell stories of trick or treating when they were young, filled with nostalgic yearning for a by-gone era.

However, it begs the question: is this nostalgia a clever trick played by the brain? Much like the wistful way people talk about searching for the perfect videotape from Blockbuster on a Friday night as if it was a fun adventure, when it was really a nightmare of first or second or even third choices being gone. You would either need to find something else or leave empty handed.  

The same goes for trick or treating. Not all of the houses were decorated, waiting with open doors and people waiting with barrels of more candy than they could eat in a lifetime. It may have been busier back then, but it was also difficult on parents walking their kids up and down the streets for hours. 

Today, there are “truck or treat” events being held in each municipality. It might seem less magical to adults who remember wandering the streets in search of full-sized chocolate bars, but that doesn’t mean the magic is gone. Kids get multiple chances to wear costumes and go to Halloween themed events offering treats and community gathering. It also gives younger kids a chance to participate. With multiple events being scheduled throughout the second half of October, it gives parents different options that may work better with their schedule.  

Windsor has many such events coming up in this October. Some examples include the Average Joe’s Sports Bar Trunk or Treat on Sunday Oct. 27 at 10 a.m., the Fogolar Furlan’s Trunk N’ Treat on Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m., and the LaSalle Truck or Treat on Oct. 24 at 12 p.m.  

There are also plenty of events for adults. Nightmare in Sandwich Town running from Oct. 25 to Oct. 27 will have ghost walks, pub crawls, a market, tarot readings and more. Additionally, WindsorEats on 400 Erie Street East will have a Halloween movie night starting at 6:30 p.m. 

No matter how someone feels about how Halloween has changed over the years, Windsor has plenty of Halloween events to enjoy this year.
