The Windsor Express defeated their playoff rival Island Storm 90-86 Nov. 21 at the WFCU Centre. In the win they picked up their fourth win this season, and now hold a record of 4-2.
Express point guard Darren Duncan had a double-double, scoring 20 points and a season high of 12 assists. Forward Chris Commons added 21 points despite an elbow injury
“We remember last year losing to them in a bitter game five, but it’s a new season,” said Commons.
Island Storm forward Greg Plummer led the Storm in scoring with 22 points while guard Shawn Vanzant had 19.
The Express led 51-42 at halftime, but the Storm was able to cut the lead to three points to start the third quarter. The Express had a strong defensive game, despite the Storm having more rebounds, assists and steals.
“We played well defensively, but on offense we struggled a little bit, but defense wins championships,” said Duncan.
The Storm eliminated the Express during the 2012-13 playoffs in the semi-finals with a 108-103 defeat.
“Since the last time we’ve played them we have improved 100 per cent. I think we have some great additions that came along, like DeAndrea Hall and Nick Evans they contribute a lot,” said assistant coach Arron McDonald.
The Express are now fourth in the National Basketball League standings and have hopes to make it to the finals this year.
“We’re really trying to make a playoff run to make it to the championship. I think we will do very well,” said McDonald.
