Polar vortex keeps mission doors open

Last week’s polar vortex prompted Windsor’s Downtown Mission to keep its doors open to the homeless longer than usual.

“Our sanctuary program is normally accessible from 9 p.m. till 7 a.m. but in the extreme weather we open early and we allow people to settle longer and not have to leave until 8:00 a.m.,” said Paula Monteleone, the mission’s manager of programs and services.

“Anyone could be dead in minus 30 temperatures when sleeping outdoors.”

Environment Canada said the combination of frigid arctic air and high winds made it feel like minus 30 degrees Wednesday and Thursday, breaking Windsor’s record for cold set in 1951.

Monteleone said the shelter can hold 103 beds but that even when they reach capacity, “we don’t turn anyone away at night.”

She said the mission offers two locations for food and winter clothes, including winter snow shoes and coats. It welcomes all people, including those from out of town and those who have inadequate shelter.
