A local taekwondo group and its instructors teach the importance of the art and self-defense.

Masters Taekwondo Academy is a self-defense school that teaches a style of martial arts that originates from Korea. They teach physical training and self discipline.

Soomin Cho, a student for two years and administration assistant of Masters Tae Kwon Do Academy said the sport is not only about the physical aspect but is also helps you mentally.

“ Taekwondo is something you can practice by yourself at home. It’s all about concentration and memorization,” said Cho.

In addition to teaching concentration, it is also safe for all ages.

Edgardo Dechavez, a third degree black belt in taekwondo says that martial arts is safe for all students, young and old.

“Martial arts is a skill, a sport and self defense,” said Dechavez. “ A lot of martial arts teach a more aggressive style and I think that it is up to the kids to pick the right martial arts for them.”

Many children also go to tournaments after choosing this style of martial arts.

Taekwondo has become a global sport that has gained an international reputation and is one of the official games at the Olympics. Dechavez says they teach children and adults a little bit differently.

“Taekwondo is about quick and fast movements,” said Dechavez. “We teach the children more about the sport and competition aspect and we teach the adults a more physical style focusing on exercise.”

Martial arts is also a key tool in building self-confidence. The act of practicing control and learning to defend oneself can play a vital role in combating bullying.

“I have a lot of experience with bullying in high school and elementary school,” said Dechavez. “I didn’t know what to do. Taekwondo helped me and I now know how to defend myself.”
