An increase in women police officers
By Ryan Jones
There are more male than female police officers in the city of Windsor.
According to a Statistics Canada report released March 28, 2018, Windsor had the fourth-lowest amount of female police officers nationwide in 2017. Women accounted for 15.9 per cent of the city’s force. Winnipeg, Brantford and Chatham-Kent rested at 13.5 per cent.
In Canada, one fifth, or 21 per cent, of police officers are female. Despite this small fraction the report states there has been an increase over time, “In 2017, there were 14,752 female officers in Canada, accounting for just over one in five officers. In 1986, the year data collection began, women accounted for 4 per cent of officers.”
Since then there has been steady growth. Between 2016 and 2017, 197 females have joined the force.
