Campus Combat wrestling returns to UWindsor
Windsor’s long-running wrestling promotion made its annual return to the University of Windsor this week.
Border City Wrestling hosted its fourth “Campus Combat” Wednesday as a part of the university’s Frosh Week.
Organizers said wrestling events like these are about more than just suplexes and body slams.
“Wrestling, for example, is a language everyone speaks. Students from different walks of life, nationalities, majors and backgrounds come out to these events and really enjoy them,” said the UWSA’s Admira Konjic.
Taking place inside the CAW Student Centre, the event followed October’s Excellence event which saw an appearance by three-time WWE Champion Rey Mysterio.
“It’s been a great partnership with the Border City Wrestling squad,” said Konjic, adding it has built a strong relationship with local wrestling fans of all ages.
“This is my third time (attending a BCW event). I even got to meet one of the wrestlers. It was pretty cool,” said eight-year-old Landin Chaaron, who was there with his parents.
About 150 people came out and the wrestling club hopes to continue that momentum in its next show in March at the St. Clair College Sportsplex. The main event will feature an appearance by former WWE World Champion Alberto Del Rio.
Meanwhile, the University of Windsor Student Alliance hopes to “tag team” with BCW for a fifth consecutive year in 2019.
