Many Canadian parents are concerned they will not be able find pain medication if their child gets sick.

Canadian pharmacies have been experiencing a shortage in children’s antibiotics, pain relief, allergy and cold medication, which can make it difficult for parents to care for sick children.

Some people say it is due to supply chain issues and a huge resurgence in infection, which is causing a high demand.

“I went to the clinic four times in the past two weeks, they’re filled with sick kids. Doctors can prescribe medication, but it is hard to find in a pharmacy, even Tylenol,” said Central Drug Mart pharmacy assistant and mother Natasha Almaani. She has three children aged six, 12 and 17.

Pharmacist Nader Samaan said because of this fear of shortage, many are overbuying products to stock up for when needed.

This has lead to wondering how to care for their sick children if they cannot obtain proper medications.

Mary Famous, another pharmacist, has advice. She recommends not putting lots of blankets on children, as this leads to their body heat rising and prevents it from escaping. Cooling children down with cooling pads under the armpits can help. She also said it is possible to look for suppositories for younger children.

“It’s best to consult the pharmacist first as to which is the safe and best alternative for their children,” said Famous.

Samaan recommended those who are sick should wear masks, keep distance from people who are coughing or appear sick and stick to a healthy diet. For the immunocompromised, use products high in Vitamin C, which can be found in any citrus fruit such as kiwi, oranges or lemon. These can also be found in supplements, but it is best to talk to a doctor before giving these to your children.
