Canadiens legend dies at 84
Eleven-time Stanley Cup champion and Montreal Canadiens alumni Henri Richard died Friday at the age of 84.
Nicknamed ‘The Pocket Rocket,’ Richard is considered one of the best players of all time. He spent his entire 20 year career playing for the Canadiens, making his debut in 1955 when he joined his brother, Maurice to help the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup.
He served as the team’s captain from 1971 until his retirement in 1975. His number 16 is raised in the rafters of the Bell Centre and is retired so no other player can wear it. He played in 1,259 games, amassing 358 goals and notching 688 assists for 1,046 points.
Richard is survived by his wife Lise, his children Michèle, Gilles, Denis, Marie-France and Nathalie, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
