Challenges in hospital hiring

Windsor Regional Hospital is facing difficulties in recruiting and keeping non-medical staff.

There are currently 35 job postings on the Windsor Regional Hospital website. One rare job posting is for a full time maintenance mechanic. Even though the position is rare, Amanda Borysowtsch, a human resource advisor for the hospital says there are only two applicants. Borysowtsch said recruiting applicants is tough, so she has to be resourceful when trying to recruit applicants. She recently started using a new system called Talent Builder, where people can apply online and allows for Borysowtsch to screen the candidates more carefully.

A big difficulty Borysowtsch is facing is competition among different employers.

“With skilled trades, I’m competing with the manufacturers. What they can offer is full time, higher wage rate, usually benefits and sometimes a pension,” she said. Since Windsor is the automotive capital of Canada, applicants have many options to choose from besides Windsor Regional Hospital.

A second challenge when recruiting is facing a shortage of skilled candidates.

“I think sometimes it’s the schooling. Not as many people going into the programs,” said Borysowtsch.

Recruiting just one candidate can sometimes cost three months salary because some candidates do not make it through their 3-month probation. Even when spending the time and the money, the outcome does not always lead to a successful employee. Borysowtsch explained that some candidates accept the position, and during their probationary period decide that the job is not what they thought it was.

Adriana Pizzo, another HR advisor says that Windsor Regional Hospital is in constant movement with recruiting and staffing. Pizzo when recruiting finds her own challenges in terms of new generation entering into the workforce.

“I find the turnover nowadays is much higher than the previous generations,” says Pizzo. A survey done by Deloitte, a multinational service network, surveyed 10,455 millennials and found that nearly half plan to leave a job within two years.

When recruiting and hiring, Borysowtsch says that the best policy is to be honest with people and advise them what the program is going to be like.
