For those who love books and good deals, LaSalle Public School is having its fifth used book and toy sale on June 11 and 12.
The sale is being held to raise money for African orphans through the Creation of Hope, a Canadian organization started by author Eric Walters. Most of the money will go towards the schooling of students in Africa who cannot afford it on their own.
Faith Mwikali Muthenya is one of the students who has had her tuition paid by funds raised at past book and toy sales. She is just finishing her first year at Egerton University in Kenya. Eric Ngila is another student who is having his secondary school education paid for by money raised by LPS.
The book sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 11 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 12. Hardcovers are $2 and paperbacks are $1. Included in the sale will be VCRs, DVDs and gently used toys.
LPS is also asking for donations.
“Anybody who would like to make donations of used books or gently used toys, we would love to have them,” said Martha Martin, a librarian and teacher at LPS. Martin is organizing the sale with the Grade 6 students at the school. She also said donations can be dropped off during school hours. The address is 1600 Mayfair in LaSalle.
Last year the goal of the book sale was to raise $1,600. This year, they are hoping to raise $2,000 or more.
