Members of the Disabilities Studies Student Association are giving back to the disability community of Windsor.

The DSSA at the University of Windsor will be holding their first annual community pasta dinner March 8.

Taya Agius, 21, who is the co-president of the DSSA and in the Disability Studies program at the University of Windsor, has high hopes for the upcoming event.

“It is a community based pasta dinner, the first one that we have ever held,” Agius said. “We are inviting many organizations that are run out of Windsor and Essex County as well as the Disability Studies students at the university to bring them both together.”

Jessica Larkin, 22, is a social work student at the university. She said this event can benefit the disability community.

“This is a great opportunity for people who have disabilities, because it can be the chance that they might not otherwise get to network and get out and be a part of the community,” Larkin said. “Using the money to go right back into the community is a good way to make up for the money that government lacks… It is essential that we have day programs and supports in place.”

The event will be held at St. Angela Centre & Hall and will be attended by various groups from Windsor and Essex County that support disability rights. All proceeds will be donated to groups that attend. The building itself will be fully accessible for people, and any accessibility needs such as extra space for a wheelchair will be noted when buying tickets and accommodated for.

“When we are speaking, we will be providing closed captioning,” Agius said. “When people are buying tickets, we ask them if there is any accessibility accommodations that they need to make their night more enjoyable.”

Tickets were sold Feb. 5, 7, 11 and Feb. 13 from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the Toldo building at the university. Prices started at $35 and were sold until Feb. 20. Doors will be opening at 5:30 p.m.

If you missed the opportunity to purchase tickets, you can email the DSSA at [email protected] for information if you wish to donate.
