City of Windsor asks residents to vote on cannabis storefronts
By Alyssa Leonard
The City of Windsor is looking for input from residents on whether to support storefront cannabis sales.
The city has launched an online survey for Windsorites to share their opinions.
According to the survey, municipalities are faced with an all or nothing decision when it comes to regulating retail cannabis stores. If the city does not opt out, it is automatically deemed to have opted in and cannot opt out in the future. Should the city choose to opt out, however, it can opt back in at any time.
The survey will run until Jan. 4 and results will be shared with city councillors to help them make a decision. The deadline for municipalities to opt out is Jan. 22, 2019.
Currently, cannabis can only be purchased through the online retail platform, operated by the Ontario Cannabis store.
On April 1, 2019, Ontario will allow private sector retailers to sell recreational cannabis from storefronts.
