Students are arriving at St.Clair College Job Fair in Windsor.

The opportunities for employment for college students continue to grow.

St. Clair College teamed up with the University of Windsor to host Southwestern Ontario’s largest employer and student networking event on Jan. 23 at the St. Clair College Sportsplex.

Hundreds of students arrived, with some dressed to impress with resumes in hand, either in search of employment or to learn about their potential employers.

The job fair had over 100 employers registered, with job positions ranging from summer jobs to internships, part-time and full-time.

Sarah Savage a recruiter for Active Care Management, makes a point of attending the job fair every year.

“It’s a really good time for job-seekers right now because there are a lot of really great positions out there,” said Savage.

“We’re hoping to meet some people who are currently looking for work and then looking to meet some students who are graduating in the not so far future.”

St. Clair College offers another method of connecting students with local employers, known as the employment centre. They are also responsible for the Youth Program; helping students who experience problems finding work due to lack of experience, a disability or low levels of education.

Partnered with St. Clair College and the University of Windsor is the EPICentre, which educates students with an interest in entrepreneurship. With funding from the Ontario Centres of Excellence’ Campus Start program, it offers over 100 programs and services for students to take part in.

EPICentre has been reported to have helped a total of 126 startup companies and student ventures from 2017-2018.

While there are several options in finding employment as well as starting your own business, the job fair is an event that many employers and students recommend taking part in.

“You could use this opportunity to learn about what employers want,” said Allen Akintayo, a UWindsor business student in his final semester.

“You could use those skills and apply it to the job fair like this next time.”

If you are a student and plan on attending the job fair next year, you can download the job fair app on Google Play or the App Store to keep track of which employers will be attending.

This gives you time to research the ones you are interested in and mentally prepare some questions to show your potential employer that you mean business.
