Community services in Windsor crossing borders to help
There are lots of community service organizations in Windsor, and some are helping people not only in Windsor but also beyond the borders.
The Rotary Club of Windsor began exactly 100 years ago in 1918 and it has been stretching its hands and helping other nations with polio eradication since 1985.
The Rotary club believes the world is now on the cusp of eradicating polio from the planet.
“We started this program in 1985. There are three countries Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria and there has been no case of polio reported in Nigeria since 2016 which means we nullified polio in Nigeria,” said Richard Caron, governor for Rotary District 6400 in Windsor and Essex.
It is now trying to raise $1.5 million to fight polio by the end of this year. There are lot of ways to volunteer and raise funds by interacting with the Rotary club in Windsor and Essex or by joining Rotaract Club at University of Windsor.
Another organization in Windsor-Essex is dedicated to helping people who have brain injuries and to preventing the problem. It’s called the Brain Injury Association of Windsor and Essex.
It supports people who have brain injuries in the family.
“We organize education programs throughout the year and once the concussion workshop for the parents and teachers about recognizing concussion and what to do when a child has concussion and how to get them back to school,” said executive director Anna Jurak.
She also says a concussion in children can be very serious and, if not handled properly, can lead to permanent injury.
It organizes education programs four times a year and offers workshops at the request of survivors of a brain injury.
There is no direct support received from the government, so it only depend on funds raised from public.
