With a continuous rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Windsor, officials are preparing the city for the worst-case scenario.

On April 4, Premier Doug Ford announced that Ontario will allow 15 essential businesses to continue working while putting a stop to others deemed no longer essential. This is a second list as the province looks to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Business involving marijuana was considered initially but was later removed in the latest list. Construction was present in both lists but now it only allows a few projects to proceed under specific criteria.

How is construction essential in COVID-19?

Despite the green light, Jonathan Lot, Vice-President of Operations at Petretta constructions said keeping the construction going can become a challenge for contractors.

“The only thing we’re seeing is certain suppliers are shutting down, which is, you know, having an effect on certain subcontractors required because if they can’t get material, they can’t work,” said Lot.

Petretta Construction is currently working on the GEM residence with St.Clair College. This residence is a $23 million project that would be a second massive construction project for the college in 2020 after the SportsPark.

The college is not only moving ahead with construction, but it’s also converting an existing facility to serve as a field hospital with 100 beds amidst the pandemic.

David Musyj, CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital, says that the college came forward when they were approached with the idea.

“We are already starting to put beds in there and getting the area ready. Again, hopefully we never have to use it. But it’ll be ready to go if we need it as early as next week,” said Musyj.

Musyj also said that the Sportsplex can be expanded to hold up to 300 beds if necessary. He further advised everyone to stay indoors.

“This has never been a low-risk issue. This has always been a high-risk issue. Stay at home. Do not go out unless it is an emergent situation,” said Musyj.
