Council meets just ahead of deadline to vote on future cannabis retail in Windsor

Windsor City Council will vote Monday on whether to opt-in or out of cannabis retail stores, when they can legally open on the first of April.
According to a survey conducted by the city, most Windsor residents want the city to opt-in when it comes to marijuana storefronts.
The city conducted the survey to get feedback before the Jan. 21 meeting, when councilors will decide whether to allow the stores.
Municipalities which opt-out will receive an initial payment from the Ontario Cannabis Legalization Implementation Fund, but could permanently lose future funding.
Those who opt-in cannot opt-out, but those who opt-out can opt-in at a later date — but without benefit.
The city will get $253,279 from the province regardless of the decision but if they vote in favour of cannabis retail, Windsor will be one of the few cities in Western Ontario selling pot.
The deadline for municipalities to decide on cannabis retail sales is Jan. 22.
