After decades of suffering, a drought will end and a baseball fan base will let out its collective breath again.

The Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians are two teams that have not won a World Series in what many can call a lifetime. The last time the Indians won was in 1948, making it the longest drought in the American League. For the Cubs, it has been since 1908, which is the longest drought in sports history.

This World Series match-up is now set and one of these droughts will come to an end.

The cities of Cleveland and Chicago have had years of disappointment when it comes to baseball. While some of their other city’s franchises have brought home championship glory.

Already in 2016, Cleveland has seen success with the Cavaliers winning their first ever NBA final with LeBron James leading the way.  James came back to the Cavaliers with the goal of bringing them their first championship, and succeeded. The Cavaliers are a franchise that began in 1970 and went 46 years without winning a title. The Indians, established in 1915, have won two titles, in 1920 and 1948. It has been 68 years without another championship.

Chicago has seen its fair share of luck in recent memory. The NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015 in what has been referred to as a “dynasty.” The same cannot be said for Chicago’s oldest sports franchise – the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs came into the baseball world in 1876 and won back-to-back World Series titles in 1907 and 1908 but haven’t seen a championship since. The Cubs have not won a title in 108 years, the longest championship drought in sports history.

The excitement behind the Cubs vs. Indians World Series carries a lot of weight. One drought will end while the other franchise will be left holding onto the hopes of next year.
