In downtown Windsor on Ouellette Street there’s a quiet coffee shop. One could be forgiven for not knowing it was there: it doesn’t boast a large sign or recognizable franchise logo, just a little front patio with a few tables and chairs for folks who prefer to sip their coffee in the fresh air. Inside the vibe is cozy, the décor is welcoming and light jazz plays overhead while the smell of coffee lingers in the background.

Simon Griffin, a barista who has worked at the Coffee Exchange for 16 years, has seen the highs and lows of Downtown Windsor.

“It’s changed a lot even in the last five years,” said Griffin. “There was a lot of momentum Downtown pre-COVID and I don’t think it’s necessarily come back the same way. There’s a lot of talk about improving Downtown nowadays, hopefully something can come of it.”

Griffin explained how the University of Windsor opening its doors downtown helped bring in new customers.

“I honestly don’t know where we’d be without them,” said Griffin.

There are also many regulars.

“We have groups of regulars who come in every morning,” said Griffin. “I think it is a place that’s open enough that anybody can come in and find a community and find a place, or just find a place to sit right by themselves.”

Customers seem to agree the coffee is well worth the return trip.

Aidan Moir, a regular who stops by to get coffee on her way to work in the morning, really enjoys the coffee, but taste isn’t the only reason.

“For me it’s supporting the business that’s downtown,” said Moir.

Mike, who has been coming to the Coffee Exchange for about three years, said he enjoys both the coffee and the people.

“The coffee is very good, the staff is very nice and I’ve met a lot of good people here,” said Mike. “You have an interesting cross section of people here because of the location.”

Community – it would seem – is an ambience best served with an English toffee latte.
