It is not every day you see a milestone get hit, let alone be part of one. While that may be true for some, St. Clair’s men’s basketball team star guard Jesiah Deerr remains an outlier.

Deerr became the tenth player in St. Clair College men’s basketball history to reach 1,500 career points during his run with the Saints. The historic mark was hit in style, with a 26-point night where he was lights out from downtown shooting 60 per cent leading the Saints to a victory over Mohawk College.

“It felt great, with the confidence that my teammates and coaches put in me to go out there and do what I have to do,” said Deerr. “It was amazing of them for letting me be me and get to that mark.”

While writing his name in the record books will be a moment that will last a lifetime, Deerr was well aware of the milestone and made sure to soak it in while it was happening.

“I looked up at the board and saw I had 21, I knew I needed 24,” said Deerr with a smile on his face. “When the last three went down I kind of had chills when I hit it, like damn I really achieved that.”

Coming off a year that saw St. Clair capture their first OCAA gold medal since 1967, Deerr and the Saints are back on top of the power ranking and looking to add some more hardware to the trophy case. Head Coach Brendon Seguin believes that Deerr has played a big role in the transformation of St. Clair’s basketball program.

“He’s one of those guys who’s a leader in and out of the classroom, on the court and always works really hard,” said Seguin. “He’s probably the player that turned this program’s fortunes around and we love having him.”

This is a feeling shared amongst not only coaches, but teammates – with multiple members of the team praising him for his confidence, humbleness and willingness to help his teammates and lead.

“He puts everybody first before himself,” said teammate Glynn Willis-Paris. “I’ve been here since 2017 so I seen a lot of guys come through. He’s one of those special guys that will always put somebody first but always keeps that confidence at the same time.”

With his ability to lead and standout character off the court, there is no telling what the future will hold for him, but there is one thing that is certain – Jesiah Deerr’s name will be cemented in St. Clair’s history books forever.
