A marching band, student performers and guest speakers brought the CAW Centre to life at the University of Windsor last Thursday.

The 14th annual Celebration of Nations demonstrates the rich cultural diversity that exists within the campus community and Windsor-Essex County. The event allows opportunity to promote awareness of cultural differences, to learn about other cultures and to encourage everyone to celebrate their own heritage.

Karima Dairo, one of the Celebrations of Nations hosts, was more than excited to be apart of it.

“It means a lot that the University of Windsor campus is so diverse,” said Dairo. “It’s great that the International Student Society is taking one day out of the school year to celebrate our diversity and it’s great because it means I can celebrate the country I come from.”

Celebrations began at noon with a flag parade that started at Welcome Centre and continued onto the CAW centre with many students displaying their cultures.

Ward 2 Council Member Fabio Costante made a speech about how Windsor’s celebrates diversity everyday at the University of Windsor and said he was proud to be part of such a great community.

“Today is a great day of sharing food, culture, tradition and religion,” said Costante. “But it’s also a reminder of how lucky we are to be able to express our different views, our different customs and norms in a peaceful, tolerable, respectful country that has laws that allows us to be who we are.”

The event also featured information booths where students were able to display their heritage and culture for everyone to learn more.
