Farmers Educate Residents on Food
If you ask Donna Rivard, it appears the roots of Open Farms Day are taking hold.
Rivard’s Hawksview Honey, located in Harrow, was one of eight farms participating in the event to show what it takes to make anything from wine to cider. said the event presents a great opportunity to clear misconceptions about beekeeping.
“My brother is the official beekeeper,” Rivard said. “He’s going through the hive setup, explaining to people the dangers of the environment that is causing losses in the bee communities.”
The event is the product of a collaboration between Tourism Windsor Essex and the Essex County Federation of Agriculture.
Lynnette Bain is the Vice-President of Destination Development for Tourism Windsor Essex. She said part of the event’s goal is to introduce Essex County to more people.
“I think our goal would be for new people to get out into the county. So, maybe consumers who have never been out exploring to come out and encourage families,” Bain said.
