Last week, Windsor Fire and Rescue Services kicked off Fire Prevention Week.

Every year, fire departments around North America promote Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871. This year it is held from October 6 to October 12.

Last Monday, Chief Stephen Laforet held a conference at Windsor Fire and Rescue Station one located at 815 Goyeau Street.

“Last year Windsor Fire and Rescue responded to 293 fires,” said Laforet. “There were 28 civilian injuries, one civilian fatality, 17 firefighter injuries and the dollar loss was over 25 million dollars.”

Throughout the week, fire crews were kept busy engaging with the public with events across the city. Some of these events included open houses at all fire stations. Devonshire and Tecumseh Malls had fire safety booths inside and to conclude Fire Prevention Week they had truck tours at both of the malls.

Fire Prevention Week is held to help people protect their homes with smoke detectors.

Some tips you can take for saving lives with smoke detectors include: checking your smoke detector batteries every year, installing a working smoke detector outside every room and knowing how to escape if there is a fire.
