Firefighters Spread Christmas Cheer

After Windsor Firefighters spend the year preparing, City Council has kicked off Sparky’s annual toy drive.  On Nov. 23 Sparky paid a visit to Windsor City Council via zoom.  Smiling council members held up brand-new toys to give children who would otherwise be receiving nothing under the tree this  Christmas. 

     Ed Sleiman, 75, retired teacher and Ward 5  councillor, has been involved with the toy drive for more than 10 years.   

     “This isn’t about making City Council look good but rather, we want to put a smile on kids’ faces and spread joy throughout the community,” he said.

     Sean Costello, 52, is a Windsor firefighter and coordinator of Sparky’s Toy Drive. 

“We start packing toys in February to prepare for Christmas,” said Costello.  On Dec. 12 and 13 Windsor firefighters distribute the toys. Last year there were approximately 3000 children and 1200 families  represented.  We expect the need to be greater this year.”  

Toy drop off locations are at all Canadian Tire branches in Windsor as well as Toys R Us.   The distribution will take place at The Optimist Club where it will likely be done as a drive through event due to COVID-19.

 Lori Bremner,60, is a retired Early Childhood Educator and one of the lead volunteers. 

    “When money starts coming in, we shop at our community partners when popular items go on sale,” said Bremner.  “The toy drive does not give out tax receipts however, we are happy to report that every penny donated goes directly to the cause. This is because of our many great volunteers who  run the entire event.  Young people can also acquire community hours towards their high school diplomas by assisting.”
