Furious rally falls short
A disastrous second period was too much for the Windsor Spitfires to overcome.
The Spits have now dropped four of their last five games. Kerby Rychel opened the scoring with his sixteenth goal of the season early in the first. The Kingston Frontenacs rebounded to score four straight goals, three of which came in the second period. Spitfires forward Josh Ho-Sang assisted on Rychel’s goal but the duo was split up in the third period.
“We lost the game in the second and I take a lot of that upon myself,” said Ho-Sang. “I was turning the puck over, I lost a lot of draws and I think that affected the team.”
The Spits were the better team in the third period and scored two goals to make it a one-goal game, but the rally fell short.
“We switched things up in the third period,” said Ho-Sang. “If our team plays like that I think we can compete with the best teams in the league.”
Kingston forward Billy Jenkins scored twice in the second and Darcy Greenaway also had a goal to cap off a dominant period by the Frontenacs.
“I think the second period showed the type of team we have,” said Kingston head coach Todd Gill. “We have to be a little bit better in the third. You want to protect the lead but you don’t want stop doing what you had success doing.”
Windsor defenceman Nick Ebert scored his third and fourth goals of the season in the third period as he led the push back for the Spitfires. After 26 games the Spitfires sit below the .500 mark with 10 wins.
“We need to put together some back to back wins here,” said Ebert. “It’s getting pretty late in the season. It’s time for us to make a little bit of a run here.”
The Spitfires will look to start that run Nov. 29 as they host the Barrie Colts at the WFCU Centre.
