Goodfellows newspaper drive hits Windsor streets

Windsor Goodfellows launched their annual holiday newspaper drive Thursday morning hoping for generosity at local intersections.

Volunteers hit the streets for donations on Thursday, Friday and Saturday by selling the Goodfellows special edition newspaper.

President of the Goodfellows, Gilbert Barrichello, said the donations by the community are always helpful.

“Many people have been helped, and through their generous donations we are now able to expand the breakfast program that we use to have in nine schools to 28 schools. The generosity of this community is enabling us to continue and improve and expand our services to those who need it especially the children,” said Barrichello.

He points out that donations by the community has been the major support to the organization as they get no government funding.

“It’s entirely the donation from the people of the community and the money raised here stays here. What you give goes to the community,” said Barrichello.

One of the volunteers, Dave Watson says that there is no amount attached to the newspaper sales — anything goes.

“It’s for charity. Basically anywhere from a nickel to anything you want to give, it could be 20 dollars, five dollars. It doesn’t matter,” said Watson.

The Goodfellows provide about 15,000 boxes of food to the needy annually that provide meals for a few days and helps to feed about 66,000 people each year.

The organization hopes to raise $300,000 this year.
